I know in the Bridgerton fandom it’s like speaking into the void but like.
If Anthony and Ben and Simon don’t have STDs or bastards, if the Bridgerton coffers are super deep and old money with a hand wave about good investments and a single song montage of Anthony signing papers, if the Featheringtons can bounce back from housing an unmarried pregnant woman and scheming to marry her to a Bridgerton, if Marina can be considered a respectable married woman despite the nature of her scandal, if Daphne wasn’t forced to marry Berbrooke despite him and Anthony coming to an agreement and Berbrooke loudly announcing said agreement in public, if Daphne was let out of her social obligation with the Prince who was loudly and proudly courting her, if Simon was able to forgive literally being assaulted, if Kate was able to survive a regency era comatose concussion after being tossed from a horse directly onto a rock, if Edwina is able to show her face again after the public humiliation and still be desirable, if Kate and Anthony could get their happily ever after after because the Queen smiled while they danced, if Eloise can still be considered a lady and her family gets invited to balls despite being a political radical, if Eloise managed to go to the lower income side of town wearing jewel encrusted tiaras without ever being noticed or ruined from meeting with a man unchaperoned…
why on earth does everyone demand realism and realistic punishment and societal reaction for Penelope?? None of our other characters ever have been truly impacted by realism. So why now? Why this season?

Bridgerton shade of blue
Benedict Bridgerton x Female Reader
Benedict bumps into you, quite literally, at a ball while trying to escape his mother's attempts to find him a partner. You decide to humour him with a dance, not realising just how entwined you would become with him. It seems the universe will find every excuse to push you and Benedict together, no matter how much you fight it.
{Masterlist}
{Previous Chapter} - {Next Chapter}
Season one
Chapter Six - Splendid
♡♡♡
"Eloise Bridgerton."
Benedict calls his sister when he finds her smoking on the swing set in their garden. He sounded stern, as if scolding her.
Eloise groans softly as she turns on the swing. "Go on, then." She lifts the cigarette to her lips. "Chastise me."
"Spare one for me?" He asks.
Eloise is surprised by his question. He comes and sits on the other swing beside her. She holds a cigarette out to him, and he takes it, putting it between his lips and lighting it.
"Suppose I desire something different." Eloise says.
"How do you mean?"
"Just different. I watch Daphne prepare for these balls with all of those dresses and the many suitors, and I am exhausted. Suppose I want a different life, Benedict. That I truly believe I am quite capable of something more, even when I'm not allowed to have anything else."
"Then I would say... that you're not the only one." He looks at her. They smile at each other.
♡♡♡
With the next edition of Whistledown comes fascinating gossip. You find yourself, for once, clutching the paper with the need to read more.
It has become apparent that Lord Berbrooke has a child out of wedlock, and not only that, with a maid he had sent away before the child was even born. He pays nothing for the child, it seems.
Your mother had been gossiping about with the other ladies she had over for afternoon tea. In turn, their maids had gone off to gossip further.
Word spread like wildfire.
The next day, Lord Berbrooke had left town suddenly.
You made it a point to go visit Daphne. You were taken up to the drawing room where she awaited you, a smile on her face as you came in.
"It's nice of you to visit."
You take a seat with her. "I wanted to see how you were."
"I have expected you come see my brother," she admits.
"Benedict? As much as he has become my friend, I felt the need to come see you. Are you alright?"
"I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders." She smiles softly. "I am glad he is gone."
"As am I. Wretched man, he was."
You both giggle softly.
"So, the duke? He is still on your favour?" You ask.
Daphne goes silent for a moment, and then her face twitches. A realisation. The realisation she must still pretend.
"Ah, yes." She smiles.
You smile in return and take her hand. "You make a most handsome couple."
"Thank you." Her voice wavers.
You do not bring up Hastings or Berbrooke again as you have tea with Daphne. The conversation becomes pleasant. Daphne finds herself talking to you about anything that comes to mind. Not once has any of her siblings sat down and listened to her like this.
It felt nice. Really nice.
An hour passes, and you find the teapot has been emptied twice in that time. There are no more biscuits to share either. You rise from the soft sofa and gather you purse.
"Thank you for letting me visit."
"Oh, nonsense. You are always welcome." Daphne smiles.
"I shall visit again then."
Daphne looks pleased by your words.
"Benedict will be so disappointed you came by and didn't stop to see him."
You chuckle. "Let him suffer. It may humble him."
Daphne chuckles and sees you out.
♡♡♡
The next ball is as dazzling as the others. You swear with each one, Daphne gets more and more beautiful. She enters with the Duke. Of course, everyone sees.
You entered with your mother, no one paying you any mind what so ever. Not that you minded any more. You had come to terms that no one would visit you.
As Simon and Daphne dance, you decide to take a walk. You have no idea what it is they discuss when alone together.
You keep your eyes peeled for any familiar faces. Yet, no one else is present in this current room.
Meanwhile, Daphne parts from Simon and is approached by another gentleman. Her wish to find a husband and have a family may very well come true.
As you enter the next room, you find Anthony in there talking with some others. His gaze lands on you, and he excuses himself from the current conversation. He approaches you.
You smile and bow your head. "Lord Bridgerton."
"Anthony, please. You call my brothers by their name."
You smile. "Anthony."
"Benedict isn't here, I'm afraid. He has elected to sit this one out. May I have the honour?" He holds out his hand.
You take a moment to take in his request. Anthony was head of his family. A viscount. Dancing with him would surely bring you attention.
You place your hand in his. "You may."
Anthony takes you back into the other room and leads you to the dance floor. He holds you as a gentleman should while dancing with a lady. You both move with the music.
Anthony look very firm as he dances with you.
"I must say, this is an honour."
"Is it?" He asks.
"I never see you dance."
"No. I suppose not. I am not beyond dancing with friends." He says kindly.
"Then I am even more so honoured to be considered such."
You both continue dancing until the music ends. You curtsy, he bows. Anthony takes your hand and leads you back to the side of the room. With swift ease, he marks his name down on your dance card.
"I shall see to it you are never left without a dance partner, my lady," he says with a bow.
You smile.
As Anthony returns to the party, you find yourself now being looked at by others. There are gentlemen looking your way.
Could it be true that Daphne is not the only one who can shine?
Soon, you are dancing again, and a few more names are scribbled across your dance card.
You think, perhaps, Daphne Bridgerton is your good luck charm.
It makes you giddy.
Safe to say, your night was splendid indeed.

IMO Colin hates Lady Whistledown because he thinks she’s just a gossip who enjoys outing and hurting people for no reason other than to sell her papers.
I think once he realizes that Penelope used Whistledown to protect people she cares about (like Daphne from Nigel Berbrooke, Colin from a fraud of a marriage with Marina, Eloise from lying to the Queen), he won’t necessarily love Whistledown, but his hatred will lessen to a strong dislike/disapproval.
Colin understands that desperate times call for desperate measures. He himself has been incredibly impulsive in his behavior. The scene he caused with Penelope was extremely scandalous and not only ruined Penelope’s relationship, it was disrespectful towards a titled gentleman. Lord Debling could have called him out but was too much of a gentleman to do so because he realized that he had gotten in the middle of two friends who had deeper feelings for each other. And don’t get me started with how Colin was absolutely seen running after Penelope’s carriage before getting in and riding off alone with her unchaperoned, and how the driver/footmen absolutely heard him and Penelope before arriving at Bridgerton house.
Penelope herself has struggled with continuing LW, because she doesn’t like ruining people’s lives but she’s a writer and her mother would never have permitted her to publish anything for fear of what society would think. Writing in secret was the only way she could find out what people really thought of her writing and I think Colin will absolutely understand that because he is also an aspiring writer. It’s also important that he has witnessed her struggles in society this season because it will be clearer than ever to him how the only praise, sense of power or respect Penelope has ever experienced has been through Whistledown so as much as she doesn’t like the hurtful side of her column, it’s been hard for her to let go of it because it’s truly the only thing in her life that’s just hers and gives her any sense of being appreciated, admired and respected.
I think being honest about the complexity of the situation is what will get Polin past the secrecy and to a place where they are truly open and honest with each other. That is when their relationship will become unbreakable.

Chapter 6: you had to kill me, but it killed you just the same
series masterlist previous part || next part
pairing: benedict bridgerton x best friend!fem!reader WC: 4.0k words
Warnings: period-typical gender roles, idiots in love being idiots in love, angst, miscommunication (ish), lots of feelings in this one, benedict actually being the biggest idiot known to man, slow burn continues to slowly burn
Summary: You and Benedict have been best friends since childhood, but things change dramatically once you come out in society. You’re struggling to find someone you’re as compatible with and who knows you as well as Benedict, all while trying to quell your ever-growing feelings for him. Shenanigans ensue.
A/N: kind of a Benedict heavy chapter oops
May 29, 1814 - The Featherington Ball two nights prior proved quite the romantic affair, prompting not one, not two, but three proposals in its aftermath. The inquisitive minds among you may inquire, 'To whom were these proposals directed?' But the more important question, dearest reader, is of the identity of the proposer. The answer is quite simple: it was Mr Nigel Berbrooke on all three occasions. And so, the members of the ton may be unsurprised to find that Mr Berbrooke was met with three swift rejections. One hopes that Mr Berbrooke will have a shift in fortune at the Smythe-Smith musicale tomorrow night.
Among other news, our esteemed diamond has fled the spotlight. Miss Y/N Beaumont has not been spotted in the ton since the night of the Featherington ball. While Mr. Alexander Beaumont, her brother, cited an awful headache as the reason for her early departure from the ball, this author wonders whether Miss Beaumont was simply through with the social scene. One could certainly not blame her if Nigel Berbrooke is the only man of the ton who has taken romantic action this season. Hopefully, the Smythe-Smith abode will provide a better stage for young love, and if not, then at least the musicale will undoubtedly prove very entertaining.
As Francesca finished her dramatic reading of the Whistledown column, she was met with resounding laughter from her siblings. Although Nigel Berbrooke's lackluster success in his romantic pursuits was amusing in itself, Lady Whistledown's sharp wit and Francesca's theatrical flare only added to the absurdity of his situation.
Even Benedict, who was in a disagreeable mood because he hadn't spoken to you since the ball, couldn't help but chuckle. Eloise, breathless from laughter, extended her heartfelt condolences to the three unfortunate ladies who had fallen victim to the decidedly disagreeable Mr. Berbrooke.
"Three proposals in two days, all met with rejection? Positively ghastly," remarked Anthony, shaking his head in amusement.
Hyacinth was quick with a playful dig at her older brother. "Bold of you to assume you would be more successful than him, brother," came her retort, met with more giggles from her sisters and a feigned gasp of offense from Anthony.
"I assure you I absolutely would, dear Hyacinth. To start, I would refrain from pursuing three women at once. But you can rest peacefully knowing that whenever I choose to propose, my future wife will say yes in an instant," he drawled, a playful arrogance underscoring his words.
"I'd certainly like to see you try," Ben spoke, a slight edge to his voice. "Proposing to someone, I mean." Anthony turned to face his brother on the couch and raised his eyebrows, unimpressed.
He retorted with an equally cutting edge to his voice, "In reality, Benedict, it seems that you are in a better position to propose than I am, don't you think?"
As the thick tension in the room became palpable, Francesca, Eloise, and Hyacinth held their breath in anxious anticipation. Though neither brother displayed outward aggression, their words carried an unmistakable undercurrent of intensity.
Benedict's breathing grew heavier, his eyes narrowing. Keeping his temper in check, he shot back sarcastically, "And what, pray tell, gives you that impression, dear brother?" Silent ripples of anger emanated from him, and the Bridgerton sisters felt a rising unease as the dispute seemed on the verge of eruption.
Sharp and deadly, Anthony's voice cut through the charged silence of the sitting room, "The fact that you already have someone to propose to, perhaps."
Anthony had barely finished speaking when Benedict rose abruptly, hands formed into tight fists at his sides. With a murderous look on his face, he ground out, "Actually, I don't believe I do."
Seeing Anthony open his mouth to respond, Ben cut in quickly, pure poison dripping from his voice, "You are mistaken, Anthony. I have absolutely no one to propose to. There is simply nothing there. Nothing that a marriage can be built on, at least. I am aware that Y/N is looking for a husband, but it will most certainly not be me."
Hyacinth let out a quiet gasp of disbelief, quickly covering her mouth. Benedict swiftly stormed out of the room, leaving his siblings in dumbfounded silence. After a brief pause, Anthony shook his head, cursing under his breath and running after Benedict.
Benedict could barely feel his legs, white-hot anger flooding through him as he made his way to his bedroom. Typically, in such intense moments, he sought solace outdoors or channeled his frustrations into his art. But he had spent too many afternoons watching your nose scrunch as you laughed on the swings with him in the garden, and the walls of his studio were entirely filled with endless incomplete sketches of you, so he found the prospect rather unbearable at the moment.
But he felt Anthony's firm hand on his shoulder before he could reach the staircase. Rolling his eyes and turning around, Ben spat a callous, "What?"
"Benedict, you are being ridiculous," came Anthony's response, in a tone of voice that was not unkind. "I cannot pretend to understand the inner workings of your friendship with Y/N, but I do know that you are inadvertently distracting her from finding a husband."
Entirely disarmed by his brother's change in tone, Benedict let out a long breath, defeated. He ran his hands through his hair, clearly frustrated by his impossible situation.
"Perhaps the kindest thing to do would be to let her go," pressed Anthony carefully, aware of the sensitivity of the topic. "I doubt she is aware of it herself, but the girl clearly has some sort of feelings for you, and you are only leading her on, so to speak."
Benedict could only nod, anxiously chewing at his lower lip. He knew his actions at the Featherington ball were not helping in your search for a husband, but it hurt just as much to stay away. Either way, Ben was desperate to speak with you. He knew he had to give you space, but it had been two days of complete silence from both of you, and he was itching to apologize properly.
---
As you waited outside of the Bridgerton residence, you shifted on your feet. Usually, you were happy to walk in unannounced, the closeness between your family and the Bridgertons removing the need for formalities. But you were nervous to see Ben. You hadn't seen him in a few days, let alone spoken to him, and you really would rather not have the conversation you were about to have with him. Cass suggested sending him a letter, but you couldn't imagine him opening it alone, reading that you wanted distance from him. It was much better to do this in person, and hopefully, he would understand your situation. He would have to, as the Smythe-Smith musicale was tonight, and both of you would be in attendance.
Steeling yourself, you opened the front door and walked in, greeting the butler with a smile and a short wave, as you usually did. You practically skipped to the back door, eager to see Benedict despite dreading the difficult conversation ahead. You found him on the swings, staring off into the vast expanse of the Bridgerton garden. As you reached him, you tapped his shoulder three times and uttered a soft "Hi, Ben."
Immediately turning toward you, his face lit up in joy, and he stood up to hug you tight, spinning you around. "Well, hello! It's been far too long. How have you been?"
As you both settled into the swings, you cleared your throat uncomfortably. "I've been alright. How about you?"
"I've been alright. Anthony has been as irritating as ever, but unfortunately, there's no cure for that at the minute," he answered, earning a soft laugh from you.
But your face dropped quickly, and you found yourself anxiously chewing your lip and staring into his perceptive eyes. Wordlessly, he asked you what was wrong with a slight tilt of his head and furrow of his brow.
You cleared your throat again and spoke, "I apologize for running off the other night. I feel like I should explain myself. I've had some time to think in the past few days, and I do realize that I overreacted a bit, and for that, I am sorry."
He reached over to grab your hand, rubbing his thumb in a comforting manner. Although it pained you, and you wanted nothing more than to lean into his touch, you carefully took your hand out of his grasp and set it in your own lap. A look of hurt flashed briefly across his eyes, and you felt your throat tighten and your stomach ache. But you had to continue. You had to get it all out now while you still had momentum.
"I just-" you paused. "Um, it might... benefit me... if we took some time apart," you said. You knew Benedict was trying to hide how crestfallen he truly was, but you knew him too well to be oblivious to his pain.
You quickly jumped into your loosely prepared speech, "I don't mean away completely! And I don't mean forever, of course. I just think I could benefit from us... not acting how we usually do while I am trying to attract suitors."
He let your words hang in the air, fully processing what you were saying. "Of course, whatever you need. I'm sorry if I was distracting you from-"
"No!" you cut in. "Not at all! I think I was more distracting myself. This is not your fault in the least, Ben, and I'm sorry it's affecting you."
With a small smile, he shook his head, "It's quite alright, darling. I understand completely."
Except you really didn't think he understood. At all.
"Maybe... maybe we could refrain from dancing at future balls? And perhaps it is not the best idea for you to call me darling. Or kiss me on the forehead. And I know I get anxious sometimes, and you really do help me when you hold my hand, but maybe we could refrain from that as well? And I still want to see you loads, obviously, but maybe I won't ignore any potential suitors who come calling in the mornings in favor of coming to see you here."
Benedict was staring at you dumbly. Hearing you say, out loud, everything that needed to change, it was astounding to him how close of a friendship the two of you had. But he understood. Oh, did he understand. And he would do anything for you, even if anything involved giving up ballroom dances, because, let's be honest, who else would he dance with if not you. He realized you were staring at him expectantly, and he nodded quickly.
"Yes, yes, of course, dar-" He cringed internally. Perhaps this would be more challenging than expected. "Yes, of course, Y/N," he finished.
You smiled back gratefully, responding, "Well, that's settled then."
---
Benedict's earlier confidence in his ability to refrain from touching you was proving to be completely misguided. He had been at the musicale for barely an hour before he felt himself nearly vibrating with the need to be close to you. He had watched as you talked with suitor after suitor, patiently waiting for you to come over when you had a spare moment. But the spare moment never came. You were utterly enthralled in your conversations, not even sparing him a glance. The only time you had spoken to him was a small "Hello!" in passing as you walked across the ballroom holding Lord Egerton's forearm. At least you were not ignoring him purposefully, but he was still moping dejectedly about the ballroom, unable to join in the lively banter his siblings and yours always provided.
His night had not improved much by the time the musicale was over. His mother had pleaded with him to dance with Penelope Featherington, and he had begrudgingly complied. Of course, he usually enjoyed the girl's company, but tonight, he would have preferred to sulk in a corner of the ballroom by himself. Ben had also gone to the terrace with Colin and Alex but quickly opted to go back inside and torture himself by keeping an eye on you. The whole time he observed you, he could feel an unpleasant feeling deep in his stomach that traveled up his torso until it settled uncomfortably in his chest. It was an exercise in masochism, watching you flirt and smile and even giggle with other men. But Ben knew he could do nothing about it, aside from stewing in his own despair, of course. You had explicitly asked him for a chance to properly be courted without his interference, and it would be cruel to disallow you that.
While Benedict had a relatively uneventful but painful evening, you barely had a moment to yourself. Gentleman after gentleman, followed by mama after mama, came to ask you to dance or talk to you. You smiled through it all, of course, but as the night wore on, you became more and more irritable, finding that you simply wanted to go and chat to Benedict for a few minutes, to take a break from social niceties and have a laugh or two with him, at least. But you needed to stay focused, or your talk with Ben would have been for nothing.
After hours of listening to the grueling sounds of the Smythe-Smiths playing various instruments, you rejoiced when your mother interrupted your conversation with some earl or viscount and his mother. Their names escaped you, but at this point in the night, you were proud of yourself for even giving them more than one-word answers. Politely excusing yourself from the pair, you smiled gratefully at your mother, who only laughed good-naturedly at your distress.
"I didn't see you talking to Ben much tonight. Is everything alright with the two of you?"
You looked at your mother, cringing. "That obvious, was it?"
She gave you a questioning look and smiled, answering, "Given that the two of you usually are attached at the hip at every event you attend, yes, it was quite obvious."
You rolled your eyes at her, hiding how truly upset you were that you and Ben had taken some time apart. "We were not that attached! Besides, it's only one ball where I was more focused on finding a husband than my best friend. You should be happy!"
---
It had not, in fact, been only one ball. You had now gone five consecutive balls without dancing with Benedict. Opportunities to talk with you at these events were scarce, and he was lucky if he managed to secure a mere five minutes alone. Colin had noticed him looking dejected and morose at every social event, not that Ben was trying particularly hard to hide it, and asked about you. Benedict's response to his brother's concern was curt and evasive, a gruff "everything is fine."
Despite the distance, Ben found solace in your afternoons together after you had finished seeing callers. The moment you saw him, you would relax and launch into a lengthy explanation of the latest exciting information you had acquired from the vast library in the Beaumont home since none of the "so-called gentlemen" bothered to listen to you, as you put it.
He did enjoy your ramblings and appreciated the opportunity to ramble himself, launching into detailed studies of his favorite artists of the time. However, he was finding himself less able to put on a happy front when he barely talked to you for days at a time. At this point, he was not even harboring any negative feelings toward any of your suitors; he just missed you. His days felt empty and long, not having been apart from you for this long since before you could speak, probably. His family had noticed, and he was growing sick of their soft voices and careful treatment of him. He just wanted you back. He wanted to feel your head on his lap again and spend hours by your side in his art studio, painting on a canvas as you sat near him and read. Most of all, he missed the comfortable intimacy that came with your friendship, the quiet understanding that had been feeling out of sorts since you asked him for some space.
So, when you had bounded into the Bridgerton home this afternoon, carrying a new book in tow, he knew he couldn't go on the way the two of you were right now. You immediately noticed Benedict's tense mood, even more so than usual, and did not relent until he spoke to you about what was bothering him. You had a feeling you knew what he was going to say, having also felt his absence to the point of distraction, and had prepared to have a talk with Ben whenever he was ready. You would usually give in to anything he asked of you, having little to no self-control when it came to Benedict Bridgerton, but you knew you had to be strong today.
Seeing his bloodshot eyes, you placed a comforting hand on Ben's shoulder, breaking one of your rules but not finding it in you to care. He put his hand over yours, instantly feeling better than he had in over a week.
"It's just hard, isn't it? Have you felt it, too?" he looked at you, feeling a tad vulnerable.
You looked away, unable to meet his eyes for fear that you would start crying. You took a breath before answering, steeling yourself. "I have. It is proving to be quite difficult. But I need to find a husband, Ben," you said, your voice firm. "So, unless you're willing to marry me, it does have to be like this," you tried to make a lighthearted comment, but the crack in your voice gave you away too easily.
Your words left him speechless, and if he was completely candid, he could have cried right then and there. Benedict understood what you were saying. What you were implying, rather. And he shook his head, voice soft, "I can't do that, Y/N. I'm so sorry."
Of course, you had expected this answer, but it didn't make it any less difficult to know that Ben was still opposed to the idea of marrying you after having experienced the last week or so. So you nodded, finally looking at him, a sad smile gracing your lips.
"I guess that's our answer, then," you spoke.
Your words were a complete blow to his chest. He felt like he was going to be sick. Because, of course, this didn't only mean that the two of you would not be married, something Benedict already knew. This meant that your friendship could truly never be the same. The search for a husband you didn't even want was simply an insurmountable obstacle.
At least for today, he could still pretend things were normal. Your hand was still enclosed in his, and for a moment, he could forget all that had transpired and just enjoy the feel of your skin against his and the promise of an afternoon full of your entertaining and lighthearted literary commentary.
---
Violet was at her wit's end. She could recognize that her son was being a complete idiot, said with affection, of course. However, Violet would not stand for you, Benedict's best friend, her own best friend's daughter, looking absolutely heartbroken night after night, talking to men who would never understand you in the way that Ben did, and who did not even want to try. She knocked on his studio door and, upon entering, let out a deep sigh at the sheer volume of sketches of your face, your hands, your eyes, and just you in general that adorned her son's art studio.
The dowager viscountess cleared her throat with an air of authority, ready to give Benedict some much-needed tough love. Once she had made herself comfortable, sitting on the couch facing Ben, Violet clasped her hands in front of her. She could tell Ben was already dreading what she was going to say.
"Benedict, my sweet. You know, when I married your father, I was over the moon to be marrying someone I was not only in love with but also someone I could call my dear friend. In my experience, friendship as the foundation of a marriage creates the best kind of partnership."
Ignoring Benedict's increasingly tense energy, she continued, "I know you have an extraordinary friendship with Y/N. Everyone knows, actually. One can very clearly see that the two of you care for one another, and a friendship as special as that is not easy to come by."
Seeing her son open his mouth to interject, Violet silenced him with a stern look, not in the mood to be interrupted. "I fear that if you do not take advantage of this wonderful gift you have been given, your best friend will end up married to another man, and your friendship will be lucky to survive."
Benedict had had quite enough already. Anthony, then you, his mother, and even Hyacinth and Colin were all telling him the same thing, clearly not understanding that he simply did. Not. Want. To. Marry. You.
He was through feeling wounded; his hurt had transformed into full-blown anger. Being mindful to keep his voice in check, he spoke with as loud of a voice as was appropriate, desperate for anyone to actually listen to what he was saying.
"Mother, I appreciate your concern. But as I have told Anthony, Y/N, Hyacinth, and Colin, I do not wish to marry Y/N. I did not want to marry her two months ago, before her debut, and I do not want to marry her now. I am sick of everyone telling me what I want or what they think I should do. I know that I do not want her, and that will be the end of the discussion, thank you very much."
Benedict barely processed his mother's sympathetic look in response to his declaration, ignoring the hand he felt on his shoulder. Disappointed and a bit sad for your future, Violet walked out of his studio, knowing Ben wouldn't continue the conversation further.
Of course, what Benedict had told his mother was a lie. A lie so often repeated in his head he had been inclined to believe it for the better part of the last decade of your friendship. But deep down, Benedict knew it wasn't the truth.
The truth was that marriage was your worst nightmare. He was all too familiar with your grievances toward the institution, having heard you talk about your distaste for having to find a husband since childhood. Ben had spent years by your side, listening to you express your aversion to marriage over and over again. You were convinced you would be miserable after being wed, endlessly searching for something more: a freedom you thought you could never achieve once you were married.
And so, he could not marry you. It was selfish, to be sure, but he did not want your distaste and displeasure with marriage directed at him. He would give you anything else, but not this. In Benedict's opinion, if he married you, you would grow to dislike him, feeling trapped within the confines of your relationship.
Throughout your shared childhood, Ben watched you grow into an incredibly smart woman, and your growth inevitably brought about a growing hostility toward your future as a wife. He was intimately familiar with the fear that brought about this hostility, and he couldn't bring himself to be the person who made these fears come true.
Benedict knew that the two of you could learn to love each other if you were married. This was, of course, assuming that he wasn't already in love with you, which he could not bear to think about properly. He just didn't think he could survive it. Having a front-row seat to the unhappiness you would feel after being married and watching you fall out of love with him because of it. He simply couldn't be the cause of that. He cared about you too much to take that risk. So he chose to stay away instead, even if it meant the end of years of close friendship and love and intimacy.

didnt she also say something nasty about the queen when one of her kids had just died
Yeah here's part 2 of this
The way she talked about the death of Queen Charlotte's granddaughter; Princess Charlotte, who was historically only twenty-one when she died in childbirth. The Lady Whistledown commentary in QC is just outright cruel, it's clear Queen Charlotte in the off-season (QC present day timeline being set in the Winter/Early spring break between season 2 & 3) becomes Penelope's biggest target in the aftermath of her fallout with Eloise. There's no other way to describe it.
Ngl the above is really disturbing to me. She's angry at Eloise, has lost access to info from the Bridgertons because of her falling out with Eloise, and she's angry at the Queen for getting angry at Penelope's own words as LW, and trying to discover LW as a result. And so she spends the off-season insulting and attacking a grieving Queen Charlotte. I mean that's one way for a flower to bloom I guess...
Theo, one of the only working class characters in the show, nearly lost his job because of lady whistledown and may have lost it in the aftermath of the season.
A lot of her general commentary as Lady Whistledown isn't clever or witty; it's just outright cruel.
The way she talks about the Bridgerton family, a family that trusts and cares for her, is horrible. Particularly, the way she wrote about Daphne in season 1.
Betraying Eloise's trust for two entire seasons because it didn't start with the Theo situation. She listened to Eloise's frustrations about Daphne and then used LW to attack and belittle Daphne. Speaking as a sibling, I will rant about my sisters until kingdom come to my friends but the minute a so-called friend starts publicly attacking my sister, it's over. I would not be in control of my actions. Like over the course of two seasons, she's attacked and nearly destroyed the reputations of Eloise's eldest sister, two of her brothers, her first love, and the entire family as a result. Judging by the Bridgertons were born to shine line in the trailer, I doubt Francesca will make it through the season unscathed.
She hasn't felt real remorse. Despite nearly causing Marina's death (as she tried to miscarry in the aftermath of LW revealing her pregnancy), she ends season 1 smirking about being LW. Hasn't written or contacted Marina to see how she has been since, got jealous Colin went to see her and still probably hasn't written or visited her. Not to mention her "I least did something. All you did is talk" speech at the end of season 2 to Eloise. A speech that wasn't even accurate as Eloise had been to meetings, listened to speeches and debates, debated with Theo, shared and read and discussed different political leaflets with Theo, Eloise had grown intellectually from the beginning to the end of the season. It's because of Penelope that that came to an end.
Outside of rescuing Daphne from her betrothel to Berbrooke in s1, what good has her work as LW actually done? It's ruined far more lives than it's helped, and intervened countless times when it didn't have authority to. Many secrets weren't Penelope's to tell.
I could honestly keep going but I genuinely don't know how she's supposed to get redeemed in eight episodes because the character we have at the minute in no way deserves a happy ending. LW didn't really matter in the books as it wasn't as active a plot point as it is in the show. By expanding the LW concept to give Penelope a more complex arc, they've unwittingly robbed her of what made people like her book counterpart and as a result created a villain that they have no intention of trying to redeem, because they don't believe she needs to be redeemed.

Part 1
"How could this not concern me, Princess Y/N? You are engaged to Duke Hastings unless you're committing adultery. In that case, Mr Bridgerton, please tell me now if she is unpure." Your mouth was left agape at the accusation.
"Lord Berbrooke, how dare you even think of the idea! I should have you taken to the dungeon for your bad conduct." The Featheringtons and Bridgertons had their mouth agape at your response.
"Princess Y/N, please, I apologize. But as a man of the ton, I am concerned that my future bride is unpure before our wedding." You let out a sigh and rolled your eyes at him. "Berbrooke, my mother shall hear of this." You said as you got into the carriage.
Nigel was left there with sweat rolling down his forehead. He looked at the carriage, and then he caught the attention of Benedict. Benedict looked over at him and had his hand rolled into a tight fist. Berbrooke fleeted at the thought of a fight waiting to happen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
You were once again announced in Lady Dauburys' ball. You found that Simon was waiting for you below the stairs and offered you his first dance. As you both got in position, Simon couldn't hold back his questions. "Y/N, you know you are like a sister to me, yes?"
"Of course, and you a brother to me."
"How can I know that Daphne is the one I truly want to be with the rest of my life? And you know my situation with children. I know for a fact that she wants a family of her own, and I can't risk taking her chance away." Before you could answer, you noticed his eyes were some place else. Following his stare, you found Daphne at the center of his attention. You smiled and patted his chest, signifying to come back to the conversation.
"I think that rather than talking to me, you should go over to her and ask her for a dance. Only you know how you truly feel about her, and I trust that you'll take care of her, too." Simon looked at you deep in thought before turning back to Daphne.
"Thank you, dear sister. I shall go do that now." You smiled as you watched him scurry towards Daphne. As you made your way towards the gardens, you noticed someone following you. You made your way towards the hedges before you felt someone grab your wrist harshly.
Turning around, you saw Nigel and his disgustingly twisted face. He dragged you back inside, gaining the attention of the ton and a certain Bridgerton. He didn't let go until you were in front of your mother, where he got on one knee.
"Crowned Princess Y/N, will you do me the honors of being my wife and the mother of my children?" You looked at Berbrooke, then looked at your mother, who was obviously shocked. She held one hand against her chest while the other was clutching Violet Bridgertons arm.
Forgetting about Nigel, you wondered why Ms Bridgerton was with your mother. Berbrooke grabbed your hand exceedingly harshly and pulled you close to him. Before you could answer, you heard another voice.
"I am sorry, Berbrooke, but I must object. I want Princess Y/N to be my wife and the mother of my children." Hearing Benedict say that vow with such passion made your heart skip. His tone was quiet, yet gave off a gentleness only you would ever get to experience. Looking at his features made you fall in love with him all over again.
Hearing Nigel shuffle up made you look away from Benedict, missing his stare almost immediately. Berbrooke was on his knees once again, begging your mother for your hand. She would not spare a glance at Nigel. She only looked between you and Benedict.
You looked at Benedict one more time, noticing his love stare before you went to your mother. "Queen Charlotte, mother, may we please leave? I am feeling quite tired and wish to get away from these embarrassing proposals." Queen Charlotte looked at you, only nodding and led you back to your carriage. Once again, you heard Benedict Bridgerton calling you more urgently.
Your mother turned towards you and smiled out of acknowledgment. She understood to wait for you and be of support to you.
"Y/N, I meant what I said about wanting to marry you. Why won't you accept my proposal?"
"Because Benedict, it was you who said you couldn't reciprocate my feelings knowing I had fallen in love with you. And don't think I don't know about your arrangements with Madam Delacroix. Benedict, I will be honest. I still love you, but I won't allow myself to love you. That is why I can't marry you." You turned your back against Benedict holding tears in your eyes.
"And if I promise that I won't stop asking until you are mine? Because Y/N, I will do everything in my power so I can have a life with you. Royal or not, I wish to be by your side every time you wake up and when you sleep. I will love you forever, and I shall be the man who gives you your first child. I will not allow Nigel Berbrooke to have all of that with you."
"What if I'm betrothed? Then what Bridgerton?"
"I will die trying because you are the woman that I fell in love with."
Holding back tears, you almost ran into the carriage. Once you couldn't see the ball, you grabbed onto your mother and started shedding your tears. Your mother could only hug you and gently caress your hair.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
The next day, you went over with your sisters who were reading Lady Whistledon. Too tired, you sat with them and grabbed a paper yourself. Noticing their stares, you looked at each of them when they told you that George wished to speak with you. You made your way into George's office, where you saw Anthony Bridgerton and Benedict Bridgerton.
"Good day, Bridgertons." You said as you bowed your head toward them, turning your attention back to George. "Georgie, my sisters are telling me that you called? What seems to be the problem?" Your brother flushed at his nickname being used in front of others.
"Nothing, dear sister, it's just that Benedict Bridgerton has come to ask for your hand in marriage." You looked between George and Benedict sharply before replying. "Surely you said no, there are a lot of suitors that I'm sure Mama would like." George shook his head," You are to be courted by Benedict Bridgerton. That is all you may leave." You looked shocked, " but Georgie." George showed you out the door before you could say anything.
Contemplating the situation you went to the gardens were you saw Simon. You quickly ran up to him and hugged him tightly. "What has you so clingy today?" He offered his arm to you, and once you wrapped it, he began leading you to a small walk. " I am to be courted by Benedict Bridgerton." Simon let out a little chuckle before looking forward again.
"And you don't want to marry Benedict? Is that the case?" You reached the garden of flowers where you got some flowers for your mother. "You know his situation with Madam Delacroix. I can't be wedded to a man who has no moral value." Simon shook his head at you before he looked towards the carriages, where he noticed Benedict making his way towards you.
"Well, I think dear sister that you're beloved is making his way here." You quickly turned your head to look when you caught the eyes of Benedict. He smiled gently towards you, smiling triumphantly.
"Duke Hastings, would you allow me to talk to Princess Y/N for a moment?" Simon glanced over to you before he answered, "Benedict, you see that bench over there? I will be there to make sure that my dear sister is okay. Do anything to her, and your courtship is over." Simon walked over to the bench a few feet away and sat with his arms crossed.
"What do you wish to tell me, Benedict?" He looked at you so enamored. "Would it be bad if I said you?"
"Yes, it would be."
"I wanted to ask for your hand, but your brother wanted me to court you before anything. Y/N, please understand that I truly do want to build a life together. I can not see myself with any other lady who is not you." You cut into his speech before he could answer.
"What about Madam Delacroix? Isn't she your lover?"
"Y/N, yes, she was my lover, but there was barely love in that moment. What you and I can have is a union between souls. Didn't you say you wanted a husband who has passion in his life? Who will love his wife before anyone in this world?"
You stayed quiet, looking towards the flowers before you heard your name from the other side of the garden. There stood Nigel Berbrooke with flowers and his mother. They walked over to you where the mother grabbed you and stated,"Lord Bridgerton, keep your hands from my future daughter in law. Princess Y/N, I am so happy that you accepted my Nigel's proposal."
"I accepted what?" You felt Simon grab your shoulder and put you behind him. "I think you are confused, Lady Berbrooke, but Y/N is to be courted by Benedict Bridgerton."

Eloise Should Have Listened to Penelope's Explanations?
Ok, how would that go down?
Penelope: Please let me explain!
Eloise: Fine.
Penelope: I did it to protect you, so the queen wouldn't think you were Lady Whistledown.
Eloise: But you are Lady Whistledown. You could have told her it was you.
Penelope: She wouldn't have believed me.
Eloise: You have accomplices that could act as witnesses.
Penelope: Umm.....
Eloise: And you know the queen only wanted flattery. You could have said some nice things about her and that would have gotten her off my back.
Penelope: I couldn't think of anything nice to say.
Eloise: it was easier for you to insult me than say something nice about the woman who integrated our racist society?
Penelope: Uh....But I saved Colin from Marina!
Eloise: You couldn't have just told Colin about Marina?
Penelope: There wasn't time.
Eloise: But there was time to write, edit and print a Lady Whistledown article?
Penelope: I saved Daphne!
Eloise: By publishing a piece of gossip my mother sourced and spread because that gossip would line your own pockets.
Penelope: But it got Lord Berbrooke off her back!
Eloise: Who only bothered coming calling because Lady Whistledown told everyone our Drawing Room was emptier than King George's head. A Drawing Room I invited you into.
Penelope: Umm....
Eloise: And let's not even get started on the ableism-
Penelope: YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS!!!!!!!

The Second Bridgerton and I
Benedict Bridgerton x Reader
Summary: Y/n Clearwater becomes named the “Sparkling Diamond” by Queen Charlotte herself, but she doesn’t know what to do with all this attention. Of course she has her family, but sometimes that doesn’t seem enough. But what happens when she encounters a specific Bridgerton, which changes the course of her season.
Authors Note: This is my first story I’ve written so it might be bad, but bear with me. This might become a series depending on how well this does. This is based off season 3 of Bridgerton and uses plot points and scenes from season 3. Below is the link to Part 2.
Warnings: Lord Berbrooke (that should be an explanation in itself)
Author’s Notes: Y/nn= reader’s nickname
The rocking of the carriage did little to settle my nerves. My family and I were currently on our way to attend the first ball of the season hosted by Lady Danbury. I tried to look outside of the carriage to find some sort of comfort, but it did very little. I felt a hand on my knee and turned to see my mother with a smile. I must have been subconsciously shaking my knee again. It was a habit I had whenever I was nervous.
“Are you alright dearest?” My mama asked.
“Yes mama.” With a tight lipped smile.
I tried to act calm, but it appears my appearance matched how I was feeling on the inside. My mama took her hand from my knee, grabbed my gloved hand and tightly squeezed it.
“I know you are nervous” my mama started, “and rightfully so. Being honored to be named the Queen’s sparkling diamond is no easy feat. It’s a lot to take in, but I want you to know that I am here, your sister and brothers are here as is your father. You are not alone.”
I looked at my mom as she smiled at me. I turned across to me to my sister Adeline who also gave me a comforting smile. My dear two brothers and father were in the carriage in front is us, but I knew that they would be there for me. I’m glad that my mama didn’t say that there is no need to be nervous. She knew that I had the right to be nervous as this season’s diamond. All eyes would be upon me. All eligible suitors would sought after me. My mama wanted to make sure that I knew that I had the support of my family and that is all I needed.I looked at my mama and smiled. A genuine smile this time and she smiled back.
“Besides” Adeline said, “I’m sure Aunt Athena would push away any eligible suitor that disrespects you in any way. Remember the incident last season?”
We all couldn’t help but laugh, which eased all the tension I had left. I gave Adeline a grateful smile and she smiled in understanding. Satisfied that her little joke helped me out a little bit.
Adeline made her debut last season and there was an incident with a suitor that caused Aunt Athena to get rather mischievous. I had not been at the ball that night, since I had not made my debut yet, but it was quite a funny story that was told when my family returned home. That was an incident that caused a buzz throughout the ton and made its way into Lady Whistledown’s paper the next day. My Aunt however didn’t bat an eyelash. That’s what I love about my family, especially Aunt Athena. We protect each other no matter what. Even if it’s out of the societal norms of the ton. This put me more at ease knowing that someone else who cared for me a lot would be at attendance at tonight’s ball.
I was supposed to make my debut last season with Adeline, but my parents and I decided to delay my debut until this season. I wanted to focus on my studies a bit more and having two daughters enter society at the same time would be a lot to handle, I pointed out to my parents. Adeline was on her second social season.
The suitors last season were anything, but satisfactory. I never attended any balls, but I was in the lounge with my mother when men called upon my sister. There was no spark that ignited with my sister amongst the men. My mama wanted us to marry for love rather than convenience, which is why she wanted us to take our time with finding a match. Which is why my mama told Adeline that it’s okay that she didn’t marry anyone last season. That just means that the right man for her would come very soon.
Our carriage came to a halt and we were alerted by our footmen that we have arrived. I took a deep breath. I could do this I thought.The doors to the carriage opened and our footman David extended his hand for my mama to take. She took his hand and stepped out of the carriage gracefully and thanked David with a smile. My sister followed and then me.
“Thank you” I said to David.
“My pleasure Ms. Y/N.”
David was my favorite footman out of all the ones we had. He was a good listener when I was bored last season. Even though we were not related by blood we had a brother sister connection. I looked ahead and saw my mother has already walked over to my two brothers and father who have already stepped out of their carriage. They were conversing with my Aunt Athena and her family as well. They must have arrived shortly before us.
“Do I look presentable?” I asked Adeline.
She looked upon my lilac dress that was adorned with beautiful flowers all around at the top part of my gown and a satin lilac material below. My gloves were sheer white and had white sparkles throughout it. My hair was tied up in an intricate bun with a hairpiece that was made of amethysts. My necklace matched the hairpiece but was made of diamonds rather than amethyst to complement my gloves.
“Why do you always ask such things when you know you always look presentable and especially in lilac.” She said as she looped our arms together and started to walk towards our family. “Good thing for the both of us that our family color is purple. We both look exquisite in the color.”
She motions to our dresses and I couldn’t help but agree. While I was wearing lilac she was wearing a deep dark purple satin gown that complimented her perfectly.
“I supposed you are right.” I said
She smiled and we continued to walk to our parents, aunt and uncle, brothers and five cousins. Our brother Noah was the first to notice us and he smiled towards us.
“There you are dear sisters we were wondering what was taking you two so long”
This caused our other brother Alexander to notice our presence.
“Oh don’t be dramatic” I said, “we were a few seconds behind mama.”
“We know Noah was just teasing.” Said Alexander.
Noah was the oldest out of all of us, followed by Alexander, Adeline shortly after and then finally me.
“Y/N, Adeline it’s so good to see you both!”
Adeline and I turned to see our Aunt Athena coming towards us. Adeline and I were each squished into a hug by our Aunt Athena. She wasn’t in attendance when I presented myself to the queen because our dear little cousin Nikolai was sick. My family and I haven’t seen her ever since she arrived back in Mayfair for the season.
“Does Nikolai feel better?” I asked.
Aunt Athena pulled away from me and said, “oh yes dear much better. He completely recovered from his illness a few hours ago.”
“Splendid”
“I heard the news about you being the new diamond. That’s exciting! Are you excited?”
“I am quite excited, but I’m mostly nervous.”
“That’s okay my dear. It would be weird if you weren’t nervous. Just know that I am here for you and take your time with a match. It’s okay to be picky with your choices. After all you are going to spend the rest of your life with whoever you choose, so be wise with your decision. And you don’t need to be definite with your choice this season since this is your first season out. You have time okay.”
“I was already lectured by mama on this, but thank you anyway Aunt Athena.”
“Anytime dearest you know I will always be here.”
She gave me a gentle squeeze on both my shoulders which gave me the comfort that I needed.
“Are we all ready” my mama said.
“I believe we are Aphrodite.” Said Aunt Athena.
My grandparents named all of their children after Greek gods and goddesses, since my grandfather originally was from Greece. Which is why my mama was named Aphrodite, my Aunt was named Athena and my Uncle was named Ares. Due to this, my siblings, cousins and I are fluent in Greek as well as many other languages from our studies.
I made my way over to Noah and looped my arm with his so that he can escort me inside. Since this is my first social season it is my eldest brother’s job to escort me. My father will be escorting mama inside and Adeline will be escorted by Alexander.
“Shall we” Noah said
“We shall”
“You look stunning dear sister. I’m going to have to fight all the suitors that appear in your direction. I hope the ton does not frown upon me when I beat up a few men.”
I giggled. “Don’t be ridiculous Noah. It won’t come to that. Even if it does, I hope you are wise to not cause such a spectacle. Father and Mother would both be disappointed in you.”
“Well we shall see.” He said with a cheeky grin. I shook my head with a laugh.
We made our way into Lady Danbury’s estate and I couldn’t help and admire the decorations. She certainly outdid herself for her first ball of the season. The invitation stated that this ball shall have an autumn theme and you can tell when you walked in. There were trees, with orange, red and brown leaves, decorated all throughout the ballroom. The lighting had a warmer tone than usual to add to the theme. We ascended down the steps of the ballroom and I couldn’t help, but notice all the eyes directed upon me. Just breathe I thought. I tried to put the on my best polite smile as we walked by the other party guests. Noah escorted me towards the corner of the ballroom where mama was waiting for me.
“I don’t want to burden you” mama said, “but I have a list of some eligible bachelors that might peak your interest. If you are not ready to meet them then that’s okay.”
“No need mother. I’m out in society looking for a husband. Might as well start and see where the night takes us.”
Mama gave me a smile and looked at Noah. I looked upon him as well.
He looked at both of us and said, “No I’m staying with Cari.”
Cari, which originated from Carina, is my middle name/nick name. My father is into astrology and allowed my mom to pick our first names while he picked out our middle names based on the stars in the sky when we were born. He figured out our astrology charts when we were born and then picked a star that was in the sky the night we were born with meaning for each of us. My star name is Carina which means “dear beloved ”, which was a way for my father to say that I will always be loved. Noah’s star name is Scorpius and although it sounds venomous, its meaning is quite the opposite as it means “love and hope from the stars”. My parents struggled to have Noah and believed him to be a gift from the stars above when he was born. Alexander’s star name is Felis which means “lucky” hoping to give him some luck throughout his life. And lastly Adeline’s star name is Dara which translates to “star” in Turkish or “ pearl of wisdom”, in the old testament, hoping to bestow wisdom upon her. We sometimes call each other by our star names as nick name for each other, but Noah usually calls all of us by our full names. He only ever calls us by our star names when he is scared, nervous, upset or protective and I believe he’s feeling the latter.
“I’ll be alright Scorpius.” I use his star name as a way to calm him. “I’ll be alright. I’ll be with mama.”
Noah looked at mama and she gave him a warm smile.
“She is right dearest,” she said “she’ll be safe with me.”
Noah looks at me again and says, “Alright then, but be careful.”
“I will” I said
He places a kiss on my head while he disconnects his arm with mine and places a kiss on my mother’s cheek before leaving us to ourselves.
“Come on Y/N, let’s see if we can fill up your dance card with the men that I have selected.”
My mother takes my arm and leads me to the first gentlemen she has picked for me when we hear gasps and murmurs throughout the ballroom. Curious, mama and I look to see what all the fuss is about and we see Penelope Featherington at the top of the steps in a beautiful dark green gown. I couldn’t help, but smile at her as she walked down the stairs. When last season ended, I found a friendship in Penelope when we returned to the country side. Apparently her friendship with Eloise Bridgerton turned sour and she wanted to become friends with me, which I gladly accepted. She joined my friends and I and she visited me at my house and quickly became a part of the family. After my debut there was an event shortly after where the new debuted ladies can mingle amongst the ton. Thank the heavens above that Penelope was there to save me because the conversations I was having with the other debuted girls was anything but interesting. We had a lovely conversation and she mentioned that she will make a change this year, since she was finally ready to find a husband and I’m assuming this was the change that she was alluding to. All eyes were on her and I couldn’t help but inwardly applaud for her drastic change working amongst the men of the ton. She will definitely get to pick amongst the many suitors that will come her way.
“She looks beautiful doesn’t she mama.”
“Yes, yes she does.” My mama said with a smile.
Ever since me and Penelope became friends my mama and father treated her like their own daughter. Penelope expressed how her mother treated her and since her father passed away two seasons ago my parents took the role as her honorary. When mama looked upon she didn’t feel threatened by her but rather proud that she was on her way to finding a husband.
“Let’s go shall we.” I said.
“Of course.”
Mama took my hand and we continued our way to the first man that she could plus show me to. I went from man to man, but none of them seemed to peak my interest.
The first man was Viscount Vasenton. He was quite the gentlemen, and we bonded over music, but he was displeased when I said that I prefer the progressive chords of Beethoven’s Symphony rather than the hidden story behind it.
Lord Hamilton was nice, but only seemed to talk about himself. Our conversation, if you can even call it that was the most boring one I ever had.
Lord Joliffe was funny, kind and respectful. He took the first spot on my dance card, but I felt no spark between us and saw him only as a friend.
I had filled my dance card with two other men who have approached me, but by the end of each dance they both seemed to be through with me. All the conversations only lasted about a few sentences each. Mainly it was my fault because I was so nervous. It’s not like I wasn’t trying. I simply didn’t know how to converse with them.
My mama could sense that I was stressed and she said,
“You don’t have to continue taking with suitors Y/n. We can stop.”
“Please.”
“Why don’t you talk with Penelope. She seems to be unoccupied at the moment.”
I looked across the ballroom and saw Penelope. We made eye contact and she smiled at me with a wave. I smiled back.
“Thank you Mama”
I gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“Of course my dear Y/n”
I made my way around the dance floor and towards Penelope where she was standing near the near the drink table.
“Lovely dress you are wearing Pen. It’s simple exquisite.”
“Thank you Y/nn. I hope this change works in my favor.”
“I believe it already has. It seems that the men of the ton can’t keep their eyes off you.”
“That is true, but it seems that I have already ruined chances with a few suitors.”
“What do you mean?”
“I finished a conversation with three gentlemen and I was too nervous to have a proper conversation. They were pleased to leave me shortly after.
“I’m sorry Pen. Maybe next time. Or maybe you caught the attention of a particular Bridgerton.”
When we were in the countryside Penelope told me about her feeling for Colin Bridgerton. She also told me the cruel words that he had said about her when he talking about Penelope with several other gentleman. I found it cruel that he can talk about his friend in such a way. They are friends, so why was he so ashamed about being asked if he was courting Penelope.
“No I don’t so, but enough about me,” said Penelope “how are you feeling at your first ball.?Are any suitors catching your eye?”
“No not really. It’s quite overwhelming if I’m to be honest. I’ve tried to open for my family, but I can’t seem to feel welcome yet. Adeline last season seemed so graceful. She fit in instantly. All the men of the ton wanted her and they still do. Noah and Alex have the attention on them wherever they go. It seems so effortless for them. As for me I feel like a fish out of water. I can’t seem to quite find my place, and I never know what to say or do. I haven’t been able to tell my family this because I don’t want to worry them, but it’s been harder to make it seem like everything is fine.”
“Hey don’t stress too much,” Penelope put her hand on my arm “I’m here. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your family about this topic then I’m here for you if you want to talk about it.”
“Thank you Pen”
“Of course Y/nn”
We both then looked at the dance floor. People were getting into place for the next song. As the music started I felt a presence beside me and looked to see that it was Francesca Bridgerton. She made her debut alongside me this season. I never interacted with her much since she was always away in Bath, but she seemed nice.
“Y/n, Penelope.” Francesca said.
We both smiled at her and continued to watch the couples on the dance floor. The dancing couples that I recognized were Viscount Bridgerton with the Viscountess, my sister Adeline with a suitor, and Alexander with a girl. I looked over at Francesca and she seemed nervous. Penelope seemed to notice this as well and she said,
“You really ought to take to the floor again. Both of you”
“Ought I” said Francesca.
“Once one finds oneself on the wall, it is difficult to come off it. No matter what one does.”
“At least the wall is not asking me what makes me tick.” Said Francesca
“Did you not enjoy conversing with those gentleman? I haven’t either.” I said
“I expected conversation.” Started Francesca,” I did not expect to be inspected as if I were some rare insect writhing under a microscope.”
“I expected to be interested in someone, or for someone to possibly find an interest in me,but it appears that I am far from it. You do not much like attracting notice do you?” I asked Francesca
“No not really no.”
“Perhaps that does makes you rare. It seems as though every Clearwater and every Bridgerton was born to attract notice in one way or another. I am…different from my siblings as well.”
“As am I. It can be difficult can it not.” said Penelope.
Francesca looked at us and it seemed that she felt the same way. She thought for a moment and stated,
“But they are wonderful, each of them.”
“I know. You are lucky for that. You as well Y/n. And you are lucky to have so much notice. Even if it is trying.” Said Penelope. “For some of us, notice is very slight.”
I turned to Penelope and gave her a a comforting smile. I knew how hard it has been for her the past few seasons with the marriage market. Especially last season when both of her sisters easily found a match and she was left with no one. I can understand why she is so adamant with finishing a husband this season. I would feel that way as well if I were in her shoes.
“Miss Francesca. A dance?” Asked a young man.
“Of course my lord.”
She curtsied, and placed her drink on the table as she grabbed the man’s hand. Before she made her way to the dance floor she turned to both of us and said
“You both really ought to take to the floor again. It’s difficult to come off the floor once you are in it.”
We both smiled at her as she walked away. As we watched Francesca dance a man approached us.
“Miss Y/n is there room on your dance card for a dance?”
I had already danced with three gentlemen, so there were two spots left on my dance card.
“Uh…. Yes.”
“Perfect.”
He picked up my hand and kissed the back of it. He took my dance card from my wrist and wrote his name on the list.
“I hope you’ll be waiting for me Miss Y/n.” He said with a smile.
“I um……yes. Yes I’ll be waiting for you Lord…”
“Findlay.”
“Lord Findlay.”
He smiles at me before he disappears into the crowd.
“It seems that our season’s diamond has caught the attention of the ton.” Penelope said.
“Yes, but maybe this diamond doesn’t know what to do with all the attention thrust upon her.”
I started fiddling with hands.
“Hey how about we get some ice cream.”
I can tell that she was trying to cheer me up, but I wanted to be alone at the moment.
“I’ll stay here actually. I wouldn’t want Lord Findlay wondering about my whereabouts when he wants to dance. Can you bring me a glass? As glass or ice cream.”
“Of course Y/nn”
“Thank you Pen.”
As she walked away to the dessert table, I was left alone with my thoughts. I was rather parched, and decided to take a sip from one of the drinks at the table. It was a light brown color, which indicated that the liquid wasn’t lemonade. It took a tiny sip. Brandy. I only knew of this because it was my father’s favorite alcohol drink and he let me have a sip from time to time.
“Are you enjoying your evening Miss Y/n.”
I turned to see Lord Berbrooke. I have heard stories from Penelope, who received them from Eloise, and she was told these stories from Daphne Bridgerton. They were not very pleasant stories and I was hoping to not run into Lord Berbrooke when I made my debut when Penelope warned me about him. It appears that the heavens was not in my favor. I tried to be polite.
“Yes I am Lord Berbrooke.”
I hope he would leave it at that, but he continued.
“Would you like to dance?”
“I’m afraid not . My father or brothers approve who I ought to dance with.”
“Then why did you say yes to Lord Findlay.”
So he has been watching me. That’s not creepy at all.
“My brother mentioned that he was a good man before tonight, which is why I agreed to dance with him. It appears my brother is asking for my presence now.”
I lied seeing this as my only solution to push Lord Berbrooke away. I curtsied and walked as fast as I could away from him. However, he decided to follow me. I quickly looked around for Noah, Alex, my father or mother, but they were no where to be found. Panic started to surge in me. I looked behind me and he was still following and not far behind. I made my way into a corner where there was a a man by himself. I tapped his shoulder and he turned around to face me. He was none other than Benedict Bridgerton. I had seen him from a far but never so up close. Our social circles never crossed paths and I have only recently joined society. I knew he was handsome, but nothing could prepare me for seeing him right in front of me. What captivated me the most was his eyes. They were the most remarkable shade of blue. Clear as the water in the ocean. I could have starred at his eyes all day, but I was reminded of whom I was running from. I hope he would agree with my plan.
“Oh Lord Bridgerton. It’s time to make our way to the dance floor is not?
“What..”
“Just follow my lead.” I whispered.
He nodded in understanding. Lord Berbrooke had caught up with me.
“Miss Y/n no need to beat around the bush. Just one dance.”
“Lord Bridgerton ought to dance to with me. Right Mr. Bridgerton?”
I looked at Benedict full of hope. Hoping that he would follow through and luckily he did.
“She is right I’m afraid Lord Berbrooke. I am to escort Lady Y/n to the dance floor. I had written my name on her dance card earlier and I was lucky enough to get the last spot.”
Lord Berbrooke looked between us and seemed to get the message.
“Miss Y/n, Lord Bridgerton.”
He slightly bowed and walked away. I released a breath I didn’t know that I was holding and looked at Benedict.
“Thank you for your assistance Lord Bridgerton. Lord Berbrooke couldn’t seem to take a hint.”
“The pleasure is all mine Miss Y/n.”
“How do you know my name?”
“You are a Clearwater Miss Y/n of course I know who you are. Well I only found out your first name when the queen named you her diamond, but I always knew who you were.”
Benedict Bridgerton always knew who I was. That was a shock to hear.
“Well thank you once again Lord Bridgerton, I wish you well.”
I started to walk away, but Benedict grabbed my arm.
“Aren’t we supposed to dance with one another?”
“Do you still want to. I assumed you would no longer want to since Lord Berbrooke left.”
Benedict leaned closer until we we were kissing distance and I could feel his breath upon my face. This was definitely inappropriate, but I didn’t pull away.
“Lord Berbrooke is still watching.” He whispered.
I look towards the direction he is looking at us and I see Lord Berbrooke looking back at me. I felt instant dread throughout my body.
“Shall we.” He said.
He held out his hand for me to take. I slipped my hand into his and he guided me to our position for the next dance. The music began and it was a slow rhythm so I would be able to converse with him.
“Um….thank you again. I know I keep saying this, but I really mean it. I couldn’t find any of my brothers or father and you were the first familiar man that I can across.”
“Familiar huh.” He said with a teasing tone.
“Who isn’t aware of the Bridgerton family.”
“I suppose you were right. It was the least I could do to help you out. Two seasons ago he was dreadful towards my sister Daphne and wouldn’t want to wish what happened to her upon any lady of the ton. Especially the season’s sparkling diamond.”
I blushed when he said this. He knew who I was and he was paying attention to me. Benedict Bridgerton was known to not care for who or what happened in the ton. He never pursued eligible ladies and only had a dance or to. This made me feel subconscious and nervous knowing that he was paying attention to me , so I looked away as I couldn’t look him in the eye. I felt his fingers lift my chin back up to look back at him.
“Is everything alright Miss Y/n.”
“I’m fine.”
“Hmm”
We continued to dance in silence and the music eventually came to an end. I curtsied and he bowed.
“Can you escort me to one of my family members Lord Bridgerton? I don’t want Lord Berbrooke to intervene again.”
“It would be my pleasure.”
He extends his arm out for me and I loop my arm into his. He leads me away from the dance floor and he brings me to my two brothers who are talking amongst themselves. I clear my throat and they both look towards me to see me arm and arm with Benedict Bridgerton.
“Sister.” Alex said, “Bridgerton! It’s good to see you!”
Benedict separates his arm from me as he and Alex share a hug. I look at Noah confused and he smiles at the two.
“They went to school together.”
“Ah I see…..Brother.”
“Yes.”
“I wish to go home please.”
“Why what happened?”
“Not now later.”
Noah didn’t push it, but he knew something was wrong. I never called him brother. He looped his arm with mine and guided me towards mama and father.
“Goodbye! Miss Y/n!”
I turned around to see Benedict Bridgerton smiling at me.
“Goodbye Mr. Bridgerton I said with a smile.

The Great Queer Bridgerton Ship Poll: THE RESULTS!!!
First off, we’d just like to thank everyone for taking part in this silliness. We clocked in at 204,232 votes when we closed the poll with votes still coming in. Deeply unserious, we’re very touched.
That being said this is also VERY serious. Lives are at stake.
Onto the numbers for places (under the cut - cos it's LONG!)
Or read the results thread here on our twitter.
31. Daphne Bridgerton/Alice Mondrich - 0 votes (0.00%)
Sorry girls!
29 =. Colin Bridgerton/Harry Dankworth - 1 vote (0.0005%)
The Danklin nation were not assembled for this fight. One noble voter stood proud!
29 =. Harry Dankworth/Lord Fife - 1 vote (0.0005%)
The vote is entirely anonymous so we will never know who this one brave soul was that swung for the only Fife ship in the poll. It will ever remain a mystery…
23 = . Siena Rosso/Mme Delacroix - 2 votes (0.0010%)
Maybe next time, ladies.
23 = . Violet Bridgerton/Portia Featherington - 2 votes (0.0010%)
The Mama’s did not do it for the voters.
23 = . Mary Sharma/Queen Charlotte - 2 votes (0.0010%)
Not enough follow through on this tension to capture more votes.
23 = . Mme Delacroix/Lucy Granville - 2 votes (0.0010%)
The girls are taking a hit in the polls.
23 = . Gregory Bridgerton/Richard Abernathy - 2 votes (0.0010%)
Our first book character on the list! He fought valiantly.
23 = . Lord Haselby/Neville Berbrooke - 2 votes (0.0010%)
This niche book only fanon couple did this against all odds. Respect!
20 =. Kate Sharma/Sophie Beckett - 4 votes (0.0020%)
A previous fan favourite has slipped down the rankings in this poll!
20 = . Eloise Bridgerton/Edwina Sharma - 4 votes (0.0020%)
A similarly previously popular ship has fallen on hard times this year!
20 =. Will Mondrich/Simon Basset - 4 votes (0.0020%)
MIA since season 1, but sorely missed.
19. Hyacinth Bridgerton/Felicity Featherington - 5 votes (0.0024%)
The show may have forgotten you Felicity, but voters haven’t
18 =. Queen Charlotte/Lady Danbury - 6 votes (0.0029%)
Too many people afraid of the power of these two women kissing.
18 =. Anthony Bridgerton/Thomas Dorset - 6 votes (0.0029%)
Apparently two men holding each other and falling into a lake isn’t homoerotic enough for some.
16. Lucy Abernathy/Hermione Watson - 9 votes (0.0044%)
Another book ship taking on show giants.
15. Eloise Bridgerton/Marina Thompson - 11 votes (0.0054%)
Some people hate to see lesbians winning!
14. Brimsley/Reynolds - 38 votes (0.0186%)
Our first canon queer ship taking a hit! Only scraping top 15!
13. Francesca Bridgerton/Edwina Sharma - 96 votes (0.047%)
The votes are starting to pick up now with this outside contender!
12. Daphne Bridgerton/Cressida Cowper - 211 votes (0.1033%)
A very respectable 12th place for Daphida!
11. Eloise Bridgerton/Penelope Featherington - 236 votes (0.1156%)
A perhaps shock result to not crack the top ten!
10. Gregory Bridgerton/Gareth St. Clair - 403 votes (0.1973%)
Huge result for a book character not yet in the show! Top ten!
9. Colin Bridgerton/Michael Stirling - 636 votes (0.3114%)
A now book based pair on the shortlist from last year, coming into the top ten as an underdog!
8. Francesca Bridgerton/Michaela Stirling - 677 votes (0.3315%)
Michaela Stirling didn’t throw the first brick at Stonewall for 8th place.
7. Simon Basset/Anthony Bridgerton - 737 votes (0.3609%)
Homoerotic tension legendary enough that it brought this show into infamy. You’ve served proudly, kings
6. Francesca Bridgerton/Penelope Featherington - 970 votes (0.475%)
Another outsider in the top 10! The Fran/Pen shooters were not messing around!
5. Colin Bridgerton/Phillip Crane - 1,052 votes (0.5151%)
One olive oil joke and discussions about Ancient Greece, next thing you know -
4. Benedict Bridgerton/Paul Suarez - 1,713 votes (0.8388%)
Congrats on all the sex you had boys! It translated into votes!
3. Kate Sharma/Daphne Bridgerton - 15,911 votes (7.7906%)
Kaphne were leading the way for 5 days this week, only to be pipped to the post in the last few days. Well done on bronze!
2. Benedict Bridgerton/Henry Granville - 84,285 votes (41.2692%)
Voters gave it their all in the last 24 hours, but ultimately couldn’t take the win. A very worthy silver!
1. Eloise Bridgerton/Cressida Cowper - 97,204 votes (47.5949%)
Unreal rush at the end, nearly breaking the poll. The sapphics take the crown of Best Queer Bridgerton Ship!

@justignorethisshitshow
This just makes me picture an au that the Ton sacrifices newbies to keep the Bridgertons happy and the chaos to a minimum. A happily married and in love, Bridgerton will put themselves on a leash and less likely to cause mayhem than a free roaming Bridgerton.
Started with the Featheringtons as like the testers to see if sacrifice will keep the Bridgertons at bay. Give Violet a new friend who has a decent amount of kids to play with the Bridgerton kids. Turns out to be a success now they have a plan for when the kids start entering society.
Berbrooke was supposed to be the sacrifice for when Daphne was in her third season. The ton was getting a little nervous at her three proposal rejections but at least she was still friendly. But Daphne was uncomfortable from Berbrooke and ended up punching him out. None of them wanted to sacrifice Simon, a duke is too good of an opportunity to pass up for their daughters. Some pointed out though that Simon was best friends with Anthony so he was kinda half sacrificed as is.
When Anthony announced that he was going to marry the next season to his brothers it was in public and the rest of Ton immediately began to scramble to find a new sacrifice. The Sharma sisters were ripe for pickings. They were at a risk of financial ruin if one of the girls didn't marry well, so they wouldn't be too picky if Anthony got sent there way. If only that blasted Whistledown didn't write her edition on rakes this season! As amusing as it was they're trying to marry off the Capitol R Rake!
When Benedict was scrambling to find his lady in silver so was the rest of the ton. They saw how enamored he was her, no one knew who she was but she was gonna be the sacrifice! Most breathed a sigh of relief when Benedict got himself married off and moved to the country. They did pitty his bride though, poor girl has no idea what she's getting into.
Colin left the ton puzzled. While he does cause some of the most chaos, he also traveled frequently, and there were some seasons he was barely around or not at all. Some saw his growing interest in Penelope Featherington, but that left them wondering how do you sacrifice someone who was already sacrificed? The ton never thought about long term exposure to anything Bridgerton for the sacrifices because what do you mean they sacrificed Lady Whistledown to the Bridgertons? She was who? Was the creation of Lady Whistledown our fault?
Eloise also made the ton very nervous. They never had to deal with an unattached spinster Bridgerton before. Eloise rejected six sacrifices before, but the ton didn't worry because Penelope was there. But now she's married and what are they gonna do? The ton cried in relief when they heard Eloise got married to a single dad out in the country. No longer their problem.
So Michael was supposed to be the original sacrifice for Francesca when the ton heard the Stirlings were coming to London. They didn't want to give up a nice earl like John and thought the Merry Rake would fit right in with the Bridgertons. But Michael was off in battle, and others pushed to get Francesca married as quickly as possible. So marriage to John it was. When Francesca started wearing lighter colors again stating she was looking to remarry the plan was back on to sacrifice Michael. Best to keep Francesca where she's been and not have to sacrifice another family. They were right, though the Merry Rake did fit in with the Bridgertons.

I've been sitting on this since Bridgerton Season 3 ended, to really consider it and what I think. And the TLDR is that the actors across the board, but particularly Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Hannah Dodd, and Victor Alli, knocked it out of the park. Fabulous performances. But the structural and narrative arc writing from the Bridgerton writer's room (particularly in terms of cul de sacs and blatant contradictions and everything about Lady Whistledown--but not the switch from Michael to Michaela Stirling; I'm actually intrigued to see where they're going with that) was absolutely appalling. More below the break for anyone who wants to keep reading.
So...the writing on Season 3. I'm going to start with where I think Michaela Stirling might go, and why I think they can actually make this storyline queer while still engaging with the infertility storyline that so many people connected with in the book. There is every possibility that Francesca will decide that she both wants to be with Michaela and wants to be a mother--but Regency England doesn't have IVF, so we could theoretically keep John alive, and have Francesca be really honest with him and Michaela and come to an agreement where she and Michaela get to have a relationship, and John will agree to help Frannie get pregnant because he needs an heir. Honestly, we could have a really interesting relationship between Frannie, Michaela, and John here where everyone is here for their own specific reasons AND because they care for each other. We could Iron Widow this, people!!! Frannie can still deal with infertility and how that affects her relationships with both John and Michaela, and we still get the effects of grief and infertility on relationships.
Alternatively, we can still have John unceremoniously drop dead (this is not my preferred choice, but like...the book exists), and have Frannie lose her pregnancy. If the miscarriage is secret, Frannie could try to get pregnant again (I bet Michaela knows people) and have a series of quick miscarriages before they couldn't hide the fact that John wasn't the father anymore. This is a less strong writing choice, but it could still be an exploration of grief and infertility. So overall, I think there is an argument to be made for making this storyline queer, and I'm interested to see where it goes. I'm not hopeful that the current Bridgerton writer's room will handle this well, but like...I can see paths to go forward on without losing the themes that people resonated with from the book.
Now. We need to talk about the Lady Whistledown thing. Season 3 spent A LOT of time telling us that Lady Whistledown was a mistake and it was actively harmful and it ruined lives. And yeah, if you just watch Season 3, that sounds pretty damning and like it would be best for everyone that Lady Whistledown gets buried (or leashed by Queen Charlotte, which is what actually happens and I cannot TELL you how mad I was about that).
The problem with that is that I was here for Seasons 1 and 2. And I want the Bridgerton Season 3 writer's room to POINT TO THE LIVES THAT LADY WHISTLEDOWN ACTUALLY RUINED. Because everyone who was written about landed on their feet. Daphne avoided Nigel Berbrooke (and Violet wouldn't have been ABLE to get Daphne out from his thumb without Lady Whistledown to publish his philandering and terrible conduct. I stand by Nigel not being ruined and frankly deserving WORSE than having to run to the country). Marina was not in a good situation from minute 1 of the season for social reasons, not because of anything Lady Whistledown wrote. And here's the thing: Pen got backed into a corner on this one. She told Marina "Not Colin" (several times) and she tried to keep Marina's secret while telling Colin not to marry her. When the Whistledown outing Marina was published, Colin and Marina literally had suitcases in hand to run to Scotland. So yes, Pen stopped that marriage. But in the world of the show, Marina landed on her feet with her marriage to Sir Philip (see her "I am content" scenes in season 2), and Colin ended up happily with Penelope. So sure, Pen prevented a marriage that narratively was doomed from minute 1, but I don't think it's fair on any level to say that Lady Whistledown ruined Marina's life.
We can talk about Pen's motivations for outing Marina's pregnancy all we like (and I do think that was complicated, and a mix of selfish and selfless motivations. It's called being a complex character), but Marina's life was not ruined by Pen publishing that Lady Whistledown.
Possibly the most egregious example of Season 3 trying to reframe a Whistledown as the worst thing ever is when Penelope "ruined" Eloise in Season 2. Queen Charlotte had threatened Eloise and the ENTIRE Bridgerton family, and I think its fair enough to say that Eloise's best friend trying to take credit for Lady Whistledown given the royal threat wouldn't fly. Publishing Eloise's friendship with Theo pulled Eloise's and the Bridgerton's bacon out of the fire. And Eloise was FINE. She was at the next ball, wasn't unduly harassed there, and she came back the next season like nothing had happened. She was fine, and the family wasn't ruined BECAUSE that Lady Whistledown got published.
The interesting tension with Whistledown was when Pen was directly challenging the Queen. She was coming for the person who set the social norms and managed social attitudes in her level of society. That's FASCINATING, and Pen challenging the literal power that was directly and indirectly responsible for everyone being shitty to her and her family for two straight seasons is ENTIRELY valid and interesting. But then Season 3 happened.
Season 3 yelled with its whole chest that Penelope was bad and wrong and should be ashamed for saying mean things about people, and tweaked Queen Charlotte's brain so that that's what she cared about too, instead of caring that her authority was being publicly challenged. Like...I was here for seasons 1 and 2. Pen was deeply human in her motivations and deeply complex in what she did and did not publish. And season 3 flattened all of that to go "BE ASHAMED BECAUSE YOU SAID MEAN THINGS." I am always furious when nuance gets flattened, and this is a particularly egregious example of that. It tells us to think something that directly contradicts what the first two seasons showed us (which is shitty writing on two levels).
Then there was also the weird contradiction with the chess scene between Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte and the outing of Lady Whistledown. The chess scene was like "Keep the game going, it's more fun that way," and I genuinely thought that meant that we wouldn't get a Whistledown reveal because the GAME is the cat-and-mouse relationship between the crown and the column. Then we get the butterfly ball scene where Penelope is like, "Hey, can I keep writing? You can watch over my shoulder and make sure that I only say nice things about people." Which is UTTERLY BAFFLING because that's not the game. That's literally ending the game. There is no game if the dynamic goes from "two independent actors act and react to each each other to negotiate society and social norms" to "Penelope promises to be nice and Queen Charlotte gets to decide if she's doing that." That's not a game, that's a probationary period. It's also directly contradictory from a writing perspective, and I really don't have patience for writers directly contradicting themselves.
And the writing issues are most of why Season 3 was a fail for me. The acting was amazing, the vibes of some scenes were incredible, but the basic writing and narrative structure was a mess.

{Masterlist}
{Previous Chapter} - {Next Chapter}
Season one
Chapter Five - Diamonds
♡♡♡
The next ball you attended felt like quite the intimate affair. Understandably so.
You attended with your mother, but as soon as the Bridgerton's arrived, you waited for the opportune moment to join them. Benedict and Colin seemed particularly pleased to see you already. You were becoming quite close friends with them.
The Duke approached Daphne and asked her to dance. Anthony was about to intervene, but Lady Danbury, who had approached alongside Simon, spoke up before he could. "I shall need someone else to seek me a glass of ratafia, then. Lord Bridgerton..." She holds up her arm, "Do me the honour?"
You hide your smile at her tactics. It was so clear she was trying to prevent him from interfering further.
Anthony gives in. "Of course, Lady Danbury."
They leave.
You watch as Daphne goes with Simon into the main ballroom. You watch them go. As you enter the ballroom yourself, you watch them join the others in a dance.
They look happy together. They are enjoying themselves.
Could it be the Duke does, in fact, feel something for Miss Bridgerton? It certainly looks that way. You can only imagine what Whistledown will say about this.
Benedict smiles as he watches from beside Anthony.
"They look wonderful together," you say softly.
Anthony clenches his jaw from beside you. As the current dance ends, Anthony takes Benedict by the shoulder and urges him forward. "Go dance with your sister."
You look at them as Benedict asks, "why?"
"Because I asked you to!"
Benedict looks less than pleased but goes anyway, groaning. You watch him approach Daphne.
With Simon now free, Anthony marches off to talk to him. You sigh as you realise you are now alone.
Benedict dances with Daphne only for a short while before she parts with him and enters the next room. The same room Anthony went into with Simon. You find yourself walking that way to see what was happening.
You stand in the door as Anthony hurries past. Violet reaches out for him, but he keeps on moving. You find Daphne looking at Simon. She approaches him to speak with him.
Benedict comes up beside you. "Will you dance with me? My dance with Daphne ended early."
You chuckle and take his hand. "As did her patience, I think. What was that about?"
"I have no idea." He takes you to the dance floor. You both start to dance.
"Your family is quite something."
"That's putting it politely."
"Is Lord Berbrooke a problem?" You ask.
"I'm not sure. Anthony seemed to have it all handled." Benedict shrugs. "He seems to have control of the matter."
"Does he?"
"I think so." Though Benedict didn't sound so convinced.
"I have you any callers yet?" He asks, changing the topic. As much as he loved his family, he only cared to discuss them for so long.
"No..." You confess.
"Not one?" He asks, sounding surprised. "How is that possible?"
"The ton have their eyes on Daphne now. I shall be unlikely able to stand out at all." You tell him.
"I find that hard to believe."
"It is true. I appreciate your concern, but I fear I shall not find a match this year. I shall enjoy the rest of the season as much as I can."
Benedict frowns slightly.
"You need not pity me. I am quite content to wait another year." You assure him, or at least try to.
"Still, wouldn't it be nice to know someone noticed you?"
You keep your mouth shut. You fear him being able to read you too easily. Though it seems your silence was enough of an answer for him.
"You need not feel the need to pretend."
"It's nothing."
Neither of you speaks again. When the dance ends, you bow and part ways from him. Benedict watches you go, sensing you would rather have some time to yourself for now.
♡♡♡
Your mother enters the drawing room where you are reading. She has this morning's issue of Lady Whistledown. You care not for the gossip column.
"It seems Miss Bridgerton is indecisive about the duke."
"Is that so," you hum softly, turning the page in your book.
"She would make a fine duchess, do you not think?"
"Yes, quite."
Your mother looks up at you. You're awfully quiet this morning. "Something the matter?"
"Why should anything be the matter?" You ask.
"No reason... You are just so quiet this morning."
"Forgive me. I didn't get much sleep."
"Are you well?" She asks.
"Well enough."
Your mother comes to sit beside you. She reaches for your hand and pulls it into her lap. "You can speak with me about anything."
You smile and squeezes her hand. "I know."
"A mother knows when her daughter is upset."
"I wouldn't say I'm upset."
"Then what is it?" She asks.
You sigh and put down your book. "I have had no one caller this season. I know I am not diamond, and I know we are not Bridgerton status, but I thought surely one man in all of London would come see me."
"Yes. Well, I thought perhaps that Benedict might."
"Mother."
"I know. I know. You told me yourself. I suppose I am glad you have become friends with them. Though he would make a fine husband."
"I am sure." You smile.
"You will find someone. Perhaps not now, but soon. I am willing to wait with you."
You smile at your mother and lean against her shoulder. She kisses the top of your head gently.
You are thankful you have her.
♡♡♡
The grand picnic was an exciting time. All the ton gathered in the park to enjoy the wonderful weather and promanade. It was a chance to see who was courting who, if at all anyone.
You were in attendance with your mother and a couple of maids. You were sitting under the canopy, fanning yourself gently, not that it was extremely hot today. You scanned the park, looking out for family faces.
Lord and Lady Carlisle were strolling by. You spotted two young boys by the lake, one of which you were certain was the son of Mr Thomas who loved but two houses away from you and your mother.
Your eyes found where the Bridgerton's were stationed. Anthony and Colin appeared to be playing games with their younger siblings. Benedict was seated, watching them. You smile.
The thought of a large family seemed so comforting to you. As an only child, you would never know what it would be like to have the company of siblings.
Perhaps, you think, in your future, you may have many children. You would like your children to have the love and support and chaos of each other.
"You're smiling."
You turn to find your mother looking at you.
"What are you smiling at?" She asks softly.
"Nothing," you lie.
You know she doesn't believe you. You also know you can't hide from her either. "Do you think I can have a large family one day?" You ask.
She smiles. "I do not see why not." Your mother had already spotted the Bridgerton's across the way. She knew they were a large enough family. "One day."
You smile as you turn back to them.
"Why don't you go over? I will be quite alright with my own company for a while."
"Are you certain? I do not mind staying."
She smiles softly. "Go. Enjoy yourself. They are, after all, your friends."
You smile and thank her, rising from your seat to go join them. As you get closer, Benedict and Colin both perk up.
"Hello," you smile.
Anthony turns and smiles, too. "Hello. Come to join us, have you?"
"Is that alright?"
Before Anthony can reply, Benedict speaks up, sitting up in his chair. "Of course. Come, sit with me."
You chuckle and join him under the canopy. You sit in the vacant seat. Violet comes over with a smile. "Good to see you, dear."
"I hope I'm not intruding."
"Nonsense!" She smiles, placing a hand on your shoudler gently.
You watch the children play. Benedict offers you some food from the basket beside him, and you accept. Any sour moods about your prospects has been forgotten.
When Simon approaches on horseback, Daphne is quick to flee from her brother to join him. They stroll away.
"Are you alright?" Benedict takes the opportunity to ask.
"Hm?" You turn to him.
"The other night, you left rather quickly the other night."
"I'm fine. I was just tired. Forgive me." You offer him a smile, but he takes note it doesn't quite light up your face.
"Of course."
You continue to pick at the picnic.
Benedict watches you for a little while, but his attention is torn away when a voice calls out.
"Bridgerton!"
You look up in time to see Berbrooke coming forth with something in his hand. His face looks terrible, as if he took a beating.
"A bring cheerful new, Bridgertons."
Violet and Anthony turn to look at the man.
"I have taken matters in my own hands and sought a special license for my wedding to Miss Bridgerton."
"There is to be no wedding," Daphne states, pleading with him.
You stand, worried for Daphne.
"I told you. The arrangement is cancelled." Anthony recalls.
"Lord Berbrooke, you look in a great deal of pain," Violet says. "Shall we continue this in a more private location?"
"I require no further conversation." He says firmly. "Though perhaps I am finally speaking to the true head of the Bridgerton house. For if it were you, I imagine you would have instructed your sister to take better care than to encourage certain attentions while alone with me on the Dark Walk at Vauxhall. Of course, mere hearsay of such scandal could wreak havoc on even the most influential of families. What would someone like, say, Lady Whistledown do with such unseemly information?"
You stare at the man with shock and disgust. You had no idea lf the details of what has happened, but you know enough to know Daphne would never take part in such behaviour.
"Is that a threat?" Anthony asks.
"It is certainly not. Because in three days, I am to marry. I have the diamond of the season." Berbrooke states. "I have the beey best the ton has to offer. I have a Bridgerton. And I shall save her, as well as your entire family, from the ruin which you could not protect them." He looks at Anthony.
You want so much to make his black eye worse. You don't even realise Benedict holds your arm gently to prevent you from moving.
Simon goes to move past Daphne to do the exact same as you thought. Benedict quickly let's go of you to hold him back.
You're caught off guard by how quickly both men moved.
"I look forward to the union of our great families." Berbrooke grins. His grin sends your stomach turning. "Bridgerton. Hastings."
He leaves.
Anthony is left to look at the special license that had been thrusted upon him.
Daphne looks beyond upset.
Anthony and Violet are quick to see Daphne home. Benedict escorts you back to your mother while Colin sees to his younger siblings.
"Will she be alright?" You ask.
"I'm sure. Though you best leave this to my brother."
"She looked terribly upset."
"As she should be. Lord Berbrooke is a horrid little man." Benedict sighs. "My sister deserves the best."
You smile softly. "I'm rather fond of Daphne. Perhaps I shall pay her a visit soon?"
"I am sure she will be most pleased. For now, give her time."
You nod.
You reuter to your mother who comes to stand with you. She had seen Lord Berbrooke approach.
"Is all well?" She asks.
You let go of Benedict to join her. "It shall be in time, I'm sure."
You turn back to Benedict. "See you soon." He nods and departs.
Your mother loops her arm with yours and walks with you. You tell her little of what happened, but you know she, too, worries about Daphne.
When the eyes of the ton are all on you, there comes great pressure and challenges.

Analysis of the Character Traits of Penelope Bridgerton (nee Featherington)
I have already posted about the strengths and challenges of the character traits that Colin and Penelope share.
Here I will discuss Penelope's character traits of bravery, curiosity and comfort. Spoilers throughout.
1. Bravery
Strengths:
Overcoming obstacles: Bravery allows people to face challenges and overcome obstacles. Penelope is brave when she stands before the Ton at the Butterfly Ball to reveal herself as the writer of Lady Whistledown and beg for the Queen's mercy.
Effecting change: Bravery can lead to positive change and inspire others. Penelope is brave asking Colin for a kiss in S3E2. Penelope also uses Lady Whistledown to help people who have less power in society to make change such as when she saved Daphne from marrying Berbrooke S1 and it is how she intends to write going forward.
Challenges:
Recklessness: Penelope puts herself and those closest to her at risk of ruin by continuing to publish Whistledown. The articles she wrote about the royals (especially in Queen Charlotte) are treasonous and punishable by death. Colin is rightfully terrified of Pen being executed and his family having their assets stripped when the Queen arrives at the wedding breakfast to reveal she suspects a Bridgerton is Whistledown.
Emotional toll: Facing fear and danger takes a toll on emotional wellbeing, leading to stress. Pen has a panic attack and faints at the engagement ball in S3E5 at she faces the fear of Colin not wanting to marry her when attempting to tell him she is Whistledown.
Arrogance: Bravery requires a certain level of belief that you know better than others who have tried before. Pen influencing the Ton to direct business away from the new modiste towards Madam Delacroix was arrogant and negligent. Nicola Coughlan commented that she portrayed Penelope as arrogant in S2.
Nicola Coughlan in Teen Vogue: “I always thought of her like a little like a yo-yo in S1, that she'd kind of go out to say something, but then she had to pull it back. She'd try and be crafty and try and do this, but it was like I've gotta bring it in, and then in S2 I wanted her to have a little bit more of an arrogance about her but misplaced maybe a little bit because she's like the most famous person in London. Nobody knows that she is, and she sort of then convinced herself that her and Colin are having this love story, which they're really not in S2. But in S3, I wanna drift to feel more grounded, more like a young woman and more becoming comfortable with herself.”
2. Curiosity
Strengths:
Learning and growth: Curiosity drives individuals to seek knowledge and experience, leading to personal and intellectual growth. I really enjoyed reading a fanfic where Colin has a long inner dialogue about Pen's curiosity being really sexy. I cannot find it, if anyone knows please comment below.
Challenges:
Social ostracism: Curiosity can be interpreted as intrusive, leading to potential social rejection. Penelope's use of the Lady Whistledown pen name is demonstrative of her fear of people judging her.
3. Comfort
Strengths:
Nurturing: Comforting people create a nurturing and supportive environment, promoting emotional wellbeing in those around them. What Pen says to Colin after Francesca's wedding S3E8 is one of the most comforting things I have heard: “It's not what you do for me that makes me love you. It is your kindness, your empathy, how much you care. Just being you is enough, Colin. I do not need you to save me. I just need you to stand by me, to hold me, to kiss me.”
Challenges:
Dependency: Penelope and Colin's dynamic can be codependent at times. I read Polin fics to indulge my codependency loving heart, but I try to be more pragmatic in real life.
Neglect of self: In an effort to comfort others, comforting individuals may neglect to advocate for their own needs. Penelope flip flops on this aspect, sometimes she is selfless and sometimes she is selfish. It resonates with the argument that Alfred Adler and other psychology texts make which is that a strong need for control could be a maladaptive coping mechanism to compensate for feelings of inferiority, neglect or lack of control in other areas of one's life.
Quote of Colin appreciating Penelope's bravery S3E8:
Colin: “I simply cannot believe that a woman with such bravery loves me. How lucky I am to stand by your side and soak up even a little bit of your light. If my only purpose in life is to love a woman as great as you, then I will be a very fulfilled man indeed.” 💛
